BUCKEYE LAKE – A dream in the making for three plus years came true on Friday, Nov. 11. Anxious bike riders and skateboarders picked up brooms or scoured the Ryan Park basketball court for loose screws and other debris as a six-man crew from Suburban Rails tried to finish Buckeye Lake’s first-ever bike/skate park before dark. More than a dozen riders and skateboarders were on the ramps as soon as Jeremy Stump, co-owner of Suburban Rails, gave the OK. Dozens more watched. Council Member Peggy Wells, the project’s mother hen, just beamed. She had brought Stump and his coworkers cookies fresh from the oven. The first phase of the ramps are temporarily located on the basketball courts since cooling temperatures made pouring the new concrete pad too iffy. The ramps will be moved to the new pad in the spring. A $20,000 Community Development Block Grant from Licking County paid for the ramps. “It’s our first skate park,” grants coordinator Sue Spiker said. “This may serve as a model for other communities.” A group of BMXers known as the Lake Side Posse got the ball rolling. Together with Wells, they lobbied village council and raised about $6,000. Local businesses and organizations have donated about $9,000 more. This money will be used to install the concrete pad.
